The art of wood carving goes back to the 16th century. At first it was just a way of passing the long, snowy winters, but soon it became a cultural element of considerable importance for the small Ladin valley of Gardena.
Initially toys, tools and household utensils were carved and then sold at the spring fairs in order to supplement the meagre income from working the land. Soon the occasional artistic item was being produced. In the following years the carvers devoted more and more time to the artistic sculptures, which quickly became a recognised and world-renowned art form.
These days Gardena craftsmanship excites with sculptures and art objects reflecting both traditional and contemporary tastes. The wooden sculptures are still mostly made by hand in the traditional way. Val Gardena is also known as the valley of woodcarvers. T he subjects depicted often come from the religious tradition of the Alpine region and Nativity scenes in different versions. In the mean time sculptures of a non-religious nature are becoming increasingly popular.
The importance of the craft of wood carving to the Val Gardena can also be seen from the number of wood carvers, sculpture workshops, figure painters and gilders that there are here. Traditional subjects like crucifixes, Madonna figures, sports figures, nativities etc are produced professionally, as well as modern nativities and wood carvings of every other type.
